Getting OpenOffice.org to notice you have Java

I was trying to install some extensions to OpenOffice.org on my Ubuntu machine when I started getting a "could not create java implementation loader" error. The possible workarounds could be found in the OpenOffice.org wiki.

  • Rename/Remove your OpenOffice.org user folder. (e.g. in Ubuntu it is .openoffice.org2/user in your home directory)
  • Go into Options and uncheck Java/"Use a Java runtime environment." Restart OpenOffice.org and try to enable the extension again. Receive the same error. Return the check to the "Use a Java runtime environment (JRE)" box.

So I renamed the OpenOffice.org folder and looked at the Java options of my software. I didn't see any JRE choices though. What gives?

Turns out one last thing needed to be installed so that OpenOffice.org can use my already existing JRE. Simply type this at the terminal

sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-java-common

Restarted OpenOffice.org. It finally recongnized the installed JRE. Chose it and was soon able to install my extensions with no trouble at all!
