Google Summer of Code 2008 has started!

Google has once again opened its doors to applications for their Summer of Code program! The program started in 2005 and is aimed on promoting more open source development while giving undergraduates a chance to hone their programming skills. Last year there were about 900 students from around the world who participated in the program and helped make a difference for over 140 open source projects.

So far I only know one person from the Philippines who joined the Google Summer of Code back in 2006. This year, I hope more Philippine-based students would join this eye-opening program. I wonder if it would be possible to use this as a fulfillment for their practicum requirements?

Students can apply for the program from March 24 to 31, 2008. On the other hand, applications from open source mentoring organizations are accepted from March 3 to 12, 2008.

For more information, go visit the site and read the program's FAQ.
