The OWASP Summer of Code 2008
I've been a member of the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) for over two years now. Though I have to admit, I've only been to a single meeting. The target of this organization is to provide a free and open community whose one aim is to improve the security of web application software. In 2006, they decided to launch the OWASP Autumn of Code. This would soon be followed by the OWASP Spring of Code 2007. This year they're launching the OWASP Summer of Code 2008.
Yes, it seems organizations use seasons for coding as much as the Olympics use it for sports.
According to their press release, the aim of the activity is to financially sponsor contributions to OWASP projects. It's an open sponsorship program where participants and developers are paid to work on the organization's and web security related projects. It's also an opportunity for other entities to invest additional funding and support the said participants. Very much the same as Google's Summer of Code. The only difference is that OWASP's activity is open to everyone, not just the undergraduates.
Applications to join the activity have been opened since March 1, 2008 and will continue to be accepted until March 25, 2008. Actual start of projects begins on April 2, 2008 and end on August 30, 2008.
